Welcome to Mothers at Home Matter

Who are we?
Mothers at Home Matter (formerly known as Full Time Mothers) was launched in 1991 in the face of relentless social and economic pressure on mothers to return to paid work outside the home.

What are our aims?
Our first aim is practical: to campaign for changes in the tax and benefit system, which discriminates against the one-earner family, who pays proportionately more tax than a two-earner couple. Mothers at Home Matter actively campaign for tax breaks to recognise the fact that families who choose to raise their own children at home need financial support as well as families where both parents choose to return to work.

Our second aim is to enhance the status and self-esteem of mothers at home.A mother working in her own home makes a vital contribution to the welfare of society. This should be recognised and respected.

Our final aim is to promote understanding of the child’s need for a mother at home. A growing amount of research indicates that a child’s mother is ideally suited to providing the consistent and reliable care that a young child needs, especially in the crucial early years. Separating mother and child too soon can be detrimental to their joint health and well-being.

Who are our members?
Membership is open to all those who support our aims. Many of us are young mothers who, against all the social and financial odds, are at home with our families because this is where we feel we are needed. Some work from home or have moved on to part-time employment, but continue to support us and some are in paid work. We are also supported by fathers, grandparents, politicians and journalists who are aware of children’s need for a mother at home.
