Mommy Wars in the U.S. PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Last week in the U.S. the 'Mommy Wars' got political when Democratic Strategist Hilary Rosen incensed stay at home mothers by accusing Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, of 'never having worked a day in her life', despite the fact that she has raised a family of 5 boys.

The comedian Bill Maher then added fat to the fire on his HBO chat show "Real Time" by adding that 'Ann Romney has never gotten her ass out of the house to work'.  He later slightly backtracked by elaborating that 'there is a big difference between being a mother, and that tough job, and getting your ass out the door at 7 a.m. when it's cold, having to deal with the boss, being in a workplace, or even if you're unhappy you can't show it for eight hours.'

Yes, Bill, there is a difference.  The difference is that your home is your workplace, but you don't get paid, and you don't get a bonus and you don't get an appraisal, and you certainly don't get valued as making an invaluable contribution to society.

A Correction PDF  | Print |  E-mail

It's always nice to know that the website is being looked at, and this important correction came in from someone who read the latest post on the MAHM Blog, 'Increase in Personal Tax Allowance hits single income families'.

"Just read the blog! Doesn’t change the sentiment, but I think it could be misleading to say that under the budget single income families effectively lose out to the tune of £1,730 (being the increase in the personal allowance). More accurate to say that they lose out to the tune of the tax on that increased personal allowance, i.e. £346 (or £692 for higher rate taxpayers)….

Was good to see the child benefit threshold increased and staged – which does help the single income v dual income family at least marginally, and just at the lower ends of the spectrum."
